Wildfires Rage in Spain as Fire Crew Narrowly Escapes Death

Several firefighters were left injured as they battle the wildfires that continue raging in the eastern Valencia region in Spain.

The firefighters had a brush with death as they tried to prevent the flames from reaching the municipality of Bejis. A wall of flame approached the four firefighters, fed by high winds sweeping downwards towards them.

Local emergency services stated that three of the firefighters were injured by the flames and villagers were evacuated.

The same fire also injured 10 passengers on a train on Tuesday, bound for Zaragoza. While many passengers hurriedly got off, the driver managed to reverse the train and return safely back to the Valencia city station.

According to a study published last month in the Nature Geoscience journal, climate change has left parts of the Iberian peninsula at their driest in 1,200 years.

On Tuesday, smoke from the fire enveloped skyscrapers in Madrid, more than 400 kilometers away.

So far this year, wildfires have already burned more than 275,000 hectares in Spain and 87,000 in Portugal, with the latter representing around 1% of Portuguese territory, the highest percentage in the European Union.
