WORLD US: 5.4 magnitude earthquake strikes oil-rich region in Texas, one of the strongest ever recorded in the state Rafia Tasleem Dec 17, 2022 12:30 GMT US: One of the most powerful earthquakes in Texas history struck Friday evening in a western region of the state known for oil and fracking. There were no reports of damage or injuries at the time. The temblor had a magnitude of 5.4 and struck at 5:35 p.m. local time, according to the US Geological Survey. It was located approximately 22 kilometres north-northwest of Midland and had a depth of approximately 9 kilometres. In the meantime, the Midland office of the National Weather Service tweeted that it “would be the 4th strongest earthquake in Texas state history!" According to geophysicist Jana Pursley of the USGS's National Earthquake Information Center in Colorado, the quake was felt by more than 1,500 people across a wide area ranging from Amarillo and Abilene in Texas to Carlsbad, New Mexico."It's a significant earthquake for that region," Pursley added, “In that region such an event will be felt for a couple of hundred miles.” Also Read: Missiles pour down on Ukraine in one of Russia’s greatest attacks till date More earthquakes in the future with decreasing magnitude are being predicted The quake was followed by a less-intense aftershock, and Pursley said there could be more in the future with decreasing magnitude. “I haven’t received any information about damages but it can crack stucco or driveways close to epicentre,” she continued. A similar magnitude quake struck West Texas about a month ago. The magnitude of the November 16 quake was 5.3, with an epicentre about 153 kilometres west of Midland.
