WORLD Ukrainian latest attacks have shaken Putin - Russia could step up drone attacks Devanjan Bose Jan 04, 2023 18:26 GMT On New Year's Day, Ukraine conducted its deadliest single attack on the Russian military to date. A missile strike on a temporary barracks - where it was reported around 600 Russian soldiers were being housed - led to 89 confirmed deaths (Ukraine says it is nearer to 400). Retired Air Vice-Marshal Sean Bell says Russia made several fatal mistakes that led to the attack. Speaking to Sky News, he explains that Ukraine has been attempting to intercept Russian communications so it can work out where to target. While Moscow's troops do have secure communications, the systems are not available to everyone, and Russian soldiers have been using mobile phones "routinely". On New Year's Eve, a large number of Russian soldiers were gathered in an abandoned school and seeing in 2023 together. It would have been enough for Ukraine to locate the barracks and target it on New Year's Day, Bell says. He puts further blame on Russia's military command, saying there can be a "temptation to relax your guard" on New Year's Eve, but such a large number of troops should not have been housed together. "They should never have been there, should never have been using their mobile phones, [and they have] laid themselves open to this attack with devastating consequences," he says. He adds that modern warfare needs "discipline and professionalism and none of those are found in a conscripted army" such as the soldiers being housed in the barracks.
