Taiwan extends military conscription due to danger from China

Taiwan: In response to the threat posed by an increasingly antagonistic China, Taiwan on Tuesday announced an increase in the length of mandatory military service from four months to one year.
Taiwan constantly fears a Chinese invasion because Beijing views the island as a part of its territory that will one day be seized, if necessary, by force.

Taiwan has grown more concerned that Beijing may take similar action to annex the island

China has been rattling its sword more frequently under President Xi Jinping in recent years, and Taiwan has grown more concerned that Beijing may take similar action to annex the island as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Taiwan's president, Tsai Ing-wen, stated at a news conference that China's  "intimidation and threats against Taiwan are getting more obvious."

"No one wants war… but my fellow countrymen, peace will not fall from the sky."

"The current four-month military service is not enough to meet the fast and ever-changing situation," she continued.

"We have decided to restore the one-year military service from 2024."

Men born after January 1, 2005 will be subject to the expanded requirement, according to Tsai.

In Taiwan, a former repressive military dictatorship that has subsequently evolved into a progressive democracy, mandatory service used to be extremely unpopular.

With the intention of turning the military into mostly a voluntary force, the previous administration had cut the mandatory military service from a year to four months.
However, a recent survey revealed that more than 75% of Taiwanese citizens now think it is too brief.
