WORLD Shame or Pride? Pakistan's Miss Universe Debut Faces Backlash from Fundamentalists Sparsh Goel Sep 18, 2023 07:15 GMT Miss Universe Pakistan: Pakistan is currently experiencing a serious economic crisis. The nation's general populace's situation is deteriorating daily. The nation is experiencing unprecedented inflation. In the meantime, Pakistan had reason to celebrate when a woman was given the chance to compete in the Miss Universe pageant for the first time in Pakistan's history. The 24-year-old Erica Robin will represent Pakistan at the Miss Universe pageant later this year in El Salvador after winning the title of Miss Universe Pakistan at a competition held in the Maldives. Government Scrutiny and Controversy However, the interim government of Pakistan is having issues with the question of who has authorised participation in the Miss Universe competition and how anyone can do so. The Foreign Ministry and Intelligence Bureau of Pakistan are attempting to determine how such an issue came to light. The Miss Universe pageant's organisation has been decried by the Pakistani government as an exploitation and insult to Pakistani women. One of the first to express dissatisfaction of the pageant and demand that the government take notice and take action against those in charge of the entire process was a religious professor named Taqi Usmani. He maintained further that it was a lie to think that these women were "representing Pakistan". In a tweet about the subject, Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan of the Jamaat-i-Islami party claimed that training for and participating in such pageants was "shameful" for Pakistan. Government Investigates Miss Universe Pakistan Anwar-ul-Haq Kakkar, Pakistan's acting prime minister, gave the Intelligence Bureau the task of determining who had organised the competition and how it had been done without authorization from the government. Dawn reported that the first-ever Miss Universe Pakistan competition featured five Pakistani contestants and was run by the Dubai-based Yugen Group, which had announced in March that it had obtained the pageant's rights. According to Dawn, Taqi Usmani, a religious scholar, was one of the first to take offence and demanded that the government take notice and take action against those arranging. Additionally, he requested that any notion that these ladies were speaking for Pakistan be dispelled.
