Russia Blew Up Major Dam Near Kherson Claims Ukraine

On Tuesday, Ukraine accused Russian forces of blowing up a significant dam and hydroelectric power plant in a region of southern Ukraine that they control, threatening a major flood that might displac thousands of people, and ordering inhabitants downstream to leave.

Russian news service Tass quoted an anonymous Russian government official as claiming the dam had "collapsed" owing to damage.

The dam's failure could release 18 million cubic metres (4.8 billion gallons) of water, flooding Kherson and a number of other areas that are home to hundreds of thousands of people. It also poses a threat of a nuclear power plant that is close by and is under Russian occupation melting down. To address the problem, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened an urgent meeting.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry wrote on Telegram that "the Kakhovka dam, had been blown up, and called for residents of 10 villages on the river's right bank and parts of the city of Kherson downriver to gather essential documents and pets, turn off appliances, and leave, while cautioning against possible disinformation".
