Controversial Canadian-Pakistani Columnist and Author Tarek Fatah passes away at 73

Tarak Fatah: Noted Canadian-based Pakistani novelist and writer Tarek Fatah lost his fight with illness today, according to his daughter Natasha Fatah. He was 73.

Fatah began his media career as a reporter for the Karachi Sun

Natasha Fatah Tweeted, "Lion of Punjab. Son of Hindustan. Lover of Canada. Speaker of truth. Fighter for justice. Voice of the down-trodden, underdogs, and the oppressed. Tarek Fatah has passed the baton on… his revolution will continue with all who knew and loved him. Will you join us? 1949-2023." For his support of LGBT rights and resistance to sharia law, Fatah was well-known. He identified as a "Punjabi born into Islam" and a "Indian born in Pakistan". He was a strong opponent of Pakistan's political and religious establishment and even spoke out against India's division. In 1970, Fatah began his media career as a reporter for the Karachi Sun. However, the Zia-ul-Haq administration later accused him of sedition and expelled him from the profession in 1977. He lived in Saudi Arabia for a while before relocating to Canada in 1987. It should be emphasised that on April 21, there were erroneous claims that Fatah had passed away.
