Canada's new H1-B program to provide work permit for family of visa holders as well

Canada: Canada's Ministry of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship has recently said that under new rules study or work permits will be granted for the family members of H-1B visa holders. On Tuesday, it was announced that government to will create an open work-permit stream which will allow 10,000 American H1-B visa holders to come in and work in Canada. The announcement was made by Canada Immigration Minister Sean Fraser.

Applicability

In an official release, Canada's Ministry of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship has extended benefit for immediate family of H1-B visa holders. As per the statement of release "Thousands of workers in high-tech fields are employed with companies that have large operations in both Canada and the US, and those working in the US often hold an H-1B speciality occupation visa. As of July 16, 2023, H-1B speciality occupation visa holders in the US, and their accompanying immediate family members, will be eligible to apply to come to Canada."

New immigration stream

The Canadian government is developing a new immigration stream that is intended for allowing best tech minds in industry to come and work in Canada. The approved candidates will receive work permit for a duration of 3 years. "They will be able to work for almost any employer anywhere in Canada. Their spouses and dependents will also be eligible to apply for a temporary resident visa, with a work or study permit, as needed," said the release.

The number of applicants that will be allowed through this system has not been cleared by the immigration authority. The qualification criteria is also not specified in great detail. Ever since the mass layoffs after pandemic many H1-B visa holders working in specialized occupations mainly tech sector were left jobless.
