Prime Minister Anthony Albanese calls it a "heartbreaking day"

Australia was experiencing a "heartbreaking day," according to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

On Monday, two armed offenders opened fire at the police officers as they approached the property in response to a call from the New South Wales police.

As they approached, police officers Matthew Arnold, 26, and Rachel McCrow, 29, were shot and killed. The two had only recently started their enforcement careers. The fourth police left the scene, while another cop was wounded by a bullet.
According to Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers, who was quoted by the news agency AFP, "as soon as they entered the property, they were inundated with gunfire and they never had a chance."
He declared, "Two police officers were killed in cold blood."

During the siege, the suspects also killed a neighbour who was a civilian.

The biggest loss of life the state police has ever experienced

Katarina Carroll, the commissioner of Queensland Police, called it a "unimaginable catastrophe" and the biggest loss of life the state police has ever experienced.

Before specialised police arrived and took over the operation, she said that a group of 16 local officers had attempted to rescue the officers.

Before the suspects, two men and one woman, were shot, the siege lasted for hours, according to the BBC.

With investigations underway, Carroll said she couldn't tell if officers were enticed to the property, or comment on a probable motivation. The encounter, according to her, involved the employment of "several weapons."

Investigations will be conducted into the incident's circumstances, including the deaths.
