International Day of the Girl Child is observed on 11th October to celebrate all the girl children around the world. It was initiated by the United Nations as a step towards the empowerment of young girls.

This day is observed to be the International Day of the Girl Child as a step to raise awareness about girl rights.

This year's slogan is, "Invest in Girls' Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being".

Aim

It aims to spread awareness among the people about the various injustices and gender gaps in the society. Moreover, it tries to educate people to support girls in various ways and urges communities to amplify girls' voices.

History and significance

This started a part of the  “Because I am a Girl” campaign that addressed the ongoing injustice and struggles faced by girls on a day to day life.  The United Nations General Assembly declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child back on 19th December 2011.

Every year issues related to the nurturing of girl child is discussed on this day through various seminars and conferences. This day marks a big leap towards fulfilling human rights and the challenges faced by girls.
