The New Parliament Building reflects the diversity of India

New Parliament Building: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Parliament building on May 28. Set next to the older Parliament House, the new building has five sides and seven doors. It also has several elements that reflect the cultural diversity of the country. Many materials adorning the new Parliament House have been sourced from Rajasthan. The red sandstone, which imparts the building’s red colour has come from Sarmathura in Rajasthan. Many buildings in Delhi and elsewhere like Humayun’s Tomb and Red Fort are made from the red stone of Sarmathura. The materials from Ashoka Emblem have come from Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Similarly, the Ashok Chakra which will dominate the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha halls has been made from materials from Indore. Most of the furniture used in the new Parliament building is made from Nagpur teak, while the steel structure of the false ceilings has been sourced from Daman and Diu.There are other materials that offer glimpses into India’s cultural diversity. For example, the red granite and green stone have come from Ajmer and Udaipur in Rajasthan, respectively.

Sengol from Tamil Nadu

The new building will be adorned with Sengol, which was crafted by Tamil Nadu artisans in 1947. This 5-feet tall golden sceptre was first used in August 1947 during the transfer of power from Lord Mountbatten to Jawahar Lal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister.
