 2 Army officers, 1 BSF jawan martyred in anti-terror operation in J&K`s Kupwara

Four soldiers of Army and BSF including an army officer martyred as the security fores foiled a major infiltration bid in Machil Sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.

While two injured soldiers have been evacuated to a base hospital. 

Three terrorists were also gunned down in the anti-terror operation, which took place in north Kashmir's Machil sector, they said.

This is one of the biggest encounters in the Union Territory since April.

Around 1 am, a patrol party of the Border Security Force noticed suspicious movements near the Line of Control and challenged the intruders, leading to a three-hour gun-battle in which a terrorist was eliminated.

"Suspicious movement of unidentified persons detected by own patrolling party near LC fence at Machil Sector (in Kupwara district of north Kashmir) on night 7-8 November at 0100 hours," defense spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said.

"Constable Sudip Sarkar lost his life during the operation in Machil Sector. Reinforcements received from the Indian Army. Joint operation still underway," BSF said
