Shashi Tharoor: Congress leader posts relatable cartoon from 1919, leaves internet stunned

Shashi Tharoor: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, posted a cartoon from 1919 on social media that predicted how technology would change people's lives in the future. Intriguingly, it resembles the point at which humankind has arrived as a result of technological advancements and their profound effects on our lives.

What did the cartoon show?

The title of the cartoon is "The pocket telephone: When it will ring!" It shows several occasions when a person's cell phone would ring. At first, a man is seen hurrying to board a train as his phone rings. Another image depicts a man whose hands are full and who is attempting to pick up the phone.

When another shows the phone ringing while he is seated in a concert and everyone around him is advising him to keep it down, the third illustration focuses on the individual who is trying to speak on the phone while it is pouring heavily.

The two segments that follow show that the phone calls while he is being married and another one as he is about to hold a newborn kid. "That bell is frightening the poor mite," complains the irate mother in the cartoon.

Cartoon's caption shows a mirror

At the bottom of the cartoon, it was written "The latest modern horror in the way of inventions is supposed to be the pocket telephone. We can imagine the moments this instrument will choose for action! (By W K Haselden).”

Shashi Tharoor shared the cartoon while ranting on phones

While sharing the cartoon on Twitter, Tharoor wrote “Scarcely believable, but predictions about technology (usually wide off the mark) sometimes were eerily prescient. See this 1919 cartoon, when fixed-line telephones were still rare, which anticipated the mobile phone & the nuisance it could turn out to be 80 years later!"

The post has received 128 retweets and 728 likes since being shared. When they saw the cartoonist's insight, many online users were astonished.
