All about FelGAN

The AI, called FelGAN, was tasked with developing new wheels. Once finished, genuine wheels and the AI-designed wheels were displayed side by side, and a "discriminator" was required to determine whether the wheels were artificially created or not. The method was repeated several times until training was finished, successfully teaching the AI to build lifelike wheels.

In essence, the training taught algorithms to continuously improve and learn from their errors in order to produce more accurate results. The generated wheels, according to Audi, are “so deceptively real that even the human eye cannot, or can only barely, distinguish them from real photos.”

FelGAN was developed internally with the intention of inspiring designers because, according to the firm, during the creative process  “people tend to fall back on what is familiar to them.” Designers, however, may “draw from a practically unlimited pool of ideas” and “discover motifs from completely new perspectives.”

How does the AI help in designing wheels for Audi

According to Audi, FelGAN generates a huge number of photorealistic designs quickly or combines already existing designs in a "targeted way." However, designers frequently simply take “individual elements from FelGAN’s creations.” so the AI doesn't perform all the jobs. Using a high-tech milling machine to construct a prototype of the design, the chosen wheels are then brought to life in either aluminium or plastic.
