Apple rumoured to have dropped microLED display for the next-gen watch Ultra, Details

Apple: For more than a year, there have been rumours that the Apple Watch Ultra will have an updated microLED display; but, due to purported production challenges, the timeline has been prolonged until 2027. According to recent reports, Apple has cancelled a significant microLED order with the Austrian company ams-Osram. This purchase is likely for the next Apple Watch Ultra 3.

Apple rumoured to have dropped microLED display orders

The data originates from Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF Securities, who stated late on Friday on X that Apple had abandoned the microLED Apple Watch Ultra project. Apple was struggling to see how the high-end displays would bring value to the watch as production costs on the project kept climbing, Kuo said. The analyst stated, "Apple thinks that Micro LED can't add significant value to this product, and the production costs are too high to make it economically viable."

Additionally, Kuo reported that "many people" from the microLED development team had been let go by Apple. The number of employees laid off is unknown, and Apple has not verified the development. Kuo stated, "There's currently no visibility on any Micro LED-related projects."

Apple's Car project scrapped too

If accurate, the microLED Apple Watch Ultra project cancellation represents another setback for the company's goals, following the earlier this week cancellation of Apple's ten-year-old electric car project. Kuo stated that Apple, which wants to control the next wave of display technology to increase the competitiveness of its products, has suffered a significant setback.
