States Violence erupts during Ram Navami procession in Bengal, BJP MLA Injured Sparsh Goel Apr 03, 2023 07:57 GMT West Bengal: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed on Sunday evening that a Ram Navami gathering was attacked outside a mosque in Rishra, West Bengal's Hooghly district, and that its local legislator was hurt, prompting prohibitory orders and the suspension of the internet. Dilip Ghosh, a BJP national vice-president who attended the gathering, posted a video on social media in which stones were thrown from a mosque. The new violence occurred just days after the West Bengal Police's criminal investigation department (CID) launched an investigation into incidences of violence surrounding Ram Navami celebrations in Shibpur, Howrah district, on March 30 and 31. "In view of the deteriorating law and order situation, we immediately seek your kind intervention as per law so that the situation does not go out of control and life and property of ordinary citizens are saved," the letter stated. According to Dilip Ghosh, the BJP MLA from Purshura constituency in Hooghly, Biman Ghosh, was injured in the stone pelting and had to be hospitalised. In this footage, Biman Ghosh can be seen standing next to Dilip Ghosh and conversing on the phone. The party also released another video in which Biman Ghosh, clothed similarly, was seen lying on a stretcher. Dilip Ghosh said that his life was in danger and that party workers protected him from the stones. "We know that this violence is a result of chief minister Mamata Banerjee's appeasement tactics." Traffic movement on several roads was also restricted till Monday. The incident sparked outrage among Muslims who are fasting throughout the month of Ramzan. According to MD Yahiya, head of the Bengal Imams Association, local Muslims were preparing to break the day's fast inside the mosque when stones were thrown by participants in the Ram Navami demonstration.
