EDUCATION Yogi Adityanath Govt Cracks Down on 5000 Crore Mining Mafia Like None Other, But Future of 4000 People Now Hangs in Balance Yogi Adityanath's Bold Move Against Haji Iqbal’s Illegal Empire Shakes Up Uttar Pradesh Harsh Jun 17, 2024 10:32 GMT The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Yogi Adityanath, has intensified its efforts to break up the powerful mafia networks that are deeply ingrained in the state's criminal underworld. Haji Iqbal, an infamous mining mafia leader from the Saharanpur district, is one of the most prominent target. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently acted decisively, seizing properties owned by Haji Iqbal valued at an incredible Rs. 4,440 crores. Haji Iqbal: From Honey Seller to Mining Mafia Kingpin The story of Haji Iqbal's ascent from a menial honey vendor in Mirzapur, Saharanpur, to a criminal ruler in charge of an empire valued at more than Rs. 5,000 crores. He started by selling honey made from broken beehives. Later, he began smuggling timber. Eventually, illicit mining activities brought him great wealth. His mining partners suffered as a result of his systematic elimination of them in order to gain complete control. Political Ties and Criminal Activities Haji Iqbal's rise was assisted by his strong relationship with the late Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati, and his position as a member of the legislative assembly representing the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Because of his political ties, he was able to keep control over the mining industry even when the Samajwadi Party was in power. However, as a result of his illegal mining and land-grabbing activities, multiple lawsuits were filed against him. Government Action and ED's Seizure Yogi Adityanath's administration has taken decisive action, even if past administrations have ignored his actions. The ED has attached Haji Iqbal's 121-acre, Rs. 4,440 crores property, which is a potential site for Glocal University. With 700 staff members and 4,000 students, this university is currently facing an uncertain future. The properties that are attached were registered under the Abdul Wahid Educational and Charitable Trust, which is under the authority of Haji Iqbal, his relatives, and friends. This action represents a serious setback to his illicit activities and financial holdings. Fugitive Status and Family Involvement Although a reward of Rs. 1 lakh has been issued for his capture, Haji Iqbal is still at large. According to a recently circulated picture of him with a businessman from Dubai, he is reportedly hiding in Dubai. In the meantime, his brother Mahmood Ali, together with his four sons Wajid, Javed, Alishan, and Afzal, are imprisoned. And one of the most important people in his network is his wife, Farida Begum.
