The aspirants, preparing for the Provincial Civil Services (PCS) and Review Officer/Assistant Review Officer (RO/ARO) exams, are calling for these exams to be held on a single day. Currently, UPPSC has scheduled the exams over multiple dates and shifts, sparking concerns among candidates about fairness and equal opportunity. However, when police intervened and blocked their entry, they relocated to a nearby intersection. As tensions rose, clashes broke out between the protesters and police officers. To control the situation, the police resorted to lathi charges, using batons to disperse the gathering crowd. Videos capturing these confrontations have quickly circulated online, sparking strong public reactions. One video, shared on social media by a user named Sachin Gupta, shows students steadfastly assembled outside the Commission’s gate, even as police tried to push them back. Netizens React Strongly to Police Lathi Charge on Protesters Several users have voiced their opinions online, echoing the sentiments of the protesting students. One commenter remarked, “Why can’t these exams be held on a single day? The demand seems reasonable.” Another urged the police to act with restraint, warning, “Creating chaos will only cause more problems for everyone involved.” Some, however, argued that only candidates unprepared for the exams were fueling the protest, alleging political influence behind the movement. UPPSC Exam Schedule Sparks Frustration Among Students The UPPSC recently announced a detailed schedule for the upcoming exams, dividing them across two separate exam periods. The PCS preliminary exams are set for December 7 and 8, with two shifts each day—morning (9:30–11:30 a.m.) and afternoon (2:30–4:30 p.m.) across 41 districts in Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, the RO/ARO exams will be held on December 22 and 23, split into three shifts: two on December 22 (9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 2:30–5:30 p.m.) and one on December 23 (9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.). This schedule has affected over a million aspirants who registered to appear for these exams. UPPSC clarified that logistical challenges, particularly the shortage of examination centers that meet required standards, led to the need for multiple shifts. Despite these concerns, UPPSC maintained that these are preliminary exams and will not directly impact final rankings, intending only as a first-stage screening process. UPPSC's Response to Student Concerns In its defense, the UPPSC highlighted that this year’s overwhelming response, with more than 1.65 million candidates registered, forced the shift-based scheduling. The Commission also noted that the exams are being conducted within a tight timeframe, with just under three weeks between the PCS and RO/ARO exams—a first for UPPSC. Additionally, efforts to find more exam centers have been extensive, yet they still fall short of accommodating the high number of candidates within a single day.
