Centre Sets December-End Deadline for Ghatampur Thermal Plant's First Unit

The Indian government has set a new deadline for the commencement of the first unit of the Ghatampur Thermal Plant in Kanpur. The 1,980 MW supercritical thermal plant, being constructed by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Ltd (NUPPL), is expected to become operational by the end of December. The project has faced multiple delays, including financial issues, disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and farmer protests. The plant, comprising three units of 660 MW each, is intended to supply 75% of its power to Uttar Pradesh, with the remaining 25% allocated to Assam.

Amrit Lal Meena, recently chaired a high-level meeting to review the progress of the Ghatampur plant

The coal secretary, Amrit Lal Meena, recently chaired a high-level meeting to review the progress of the Ghatampur plant. During the meeting, he urged all stakeholders to expedite the project, which is significantly behind schedule. The UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) chairman, Ashish Kumar Goel, who attended the meeting, emphasized the need to set new targets and accelerate construction activities to meet the fresh deadline.

The NUPPL, a joint venture between Neyveli Lignite Corporation of India Ltd and the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd, is responsible for the construction of this coal-fired power plant, which has been eagerly anticipated to help address energy demands in the region. With the first unit expected to be operational by December-end, there is renewed hope for the timely completion of this vital infrastructure project.
