Madhya Pradesh Significant Changes in 'Ladli Behna' Scheme: Will it Benefit You? Shivani Negi Jun 23, 2023 08:26 GMT Ladli Behna Scheme: In a landmark move, the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government is set to make sweeping amendments to its ambitious 'Ladli Behna' scheme. This revamp will potentially extend benefits to nearly 1.2 million women across the state. Notably, the government aims to alter the age criterion for eligibility within the scheme. What Will the Revision Entail? The 'Ladli Behna' scheme, launched on June 10, set the minimum age for eligibility at 23. However, the government is proposing to reduce this to 21. Moreover, women from families owning four-wheeled vehicles were previously unable to avail of the scheme. The government now plans to exclude tractors from this category, allowing a wider audience to reap the benefits. Women's Suggestions Lead to Scheme Revamp Prior to the launch of the scheme, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan interacted with eligible beneficiaries across different districts. Many women expressed concerns about the eligibility age being set at 23, as most of them get married by 21. Besides, small farmers often own tractors for agricultural purposes. These feedback points are primarily driving the forthcoming revisions to the scheme. Congress Ridicules BJP's Initiative, BJP Welcomes the Changes The proposed changes to the scheme, especially in an election year, have drawn criticism from Congress spokesperson Mithun Ahirwar. He suggested that the BJP's efforts to appear sympathetic by offering INR 1000 during their last year in power is not sufficient in the current inflationary scenario. Nonetheless, the BJP has confidently defended their initiative and welcomed the proposed changes, setting the stage for a political showdown. The amendment to 'Ladli Behna', hence, is not only expected to affect a large number of women but also has potential implications on the political landscape of Madhya Pradesh. The effectiveness and impact of these changes, however, remains to be seen. Also Read: Showdown in August!
