Section 144 imposed at Belagavi as massive protests erupt for no to maha mela

Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute: Monday's rallies by hundreds of leaders from the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) near the Kognoli Toll Plaza contributed to an increase of tension between Karnataka and Maharashtra over the border dispute. The workers protested against Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai for forbidding the staging of a maha mela in the vicinity of Belagavi due to the inter-state border dispute.
Every year, on the first day of the winter session of the Karnataka assembly, the MES hosts a convention in Belagavi. Massive demonstrations are planned in front of the winter session of the Karnataka Assembly by MES activists, a group that has been pressing the border issue for more than 50 years.

As the 10-day winter session of the Karnataka Legislature begins today, the MES organised a protest at the Vaccine Depot Ground in Tilakwadi in the district seat town of Belagavi.

Chaos ensued on Belagavi's Tilakawadi road when hundreds of MES leaders and employees gathered to protest the Karnataka government. CrPc Section 144, which forbids gatherings of four or more people in the area in question, has been applied by the police.

But despite prohibitory orders and limitations on any form of protest, Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) employees were attempting to cross the border into Belagavi.

Tight security in Belagavi

Belagavi city has been placed on high alert due to worries over the border conflict with Maharashtra and probable interruptions from protests by different parties.

Nearly 5,000 police officers have reportedly been sent into the city to uphold law and order.

Six superintendents of police, eleven additional superintendents of police, 43 deputy SPs, 95 inspectors, and 241 sub-inspectors are among these officers, according to PTI. In addition to the MES, a number of groups, including farmers, are holding protests in Belagavi to urge their claims.

No entry for Leaders of Shiv Sena in Belagavi

Dhairyasheel Mane, a Shiv Sena member of parliament, was unable to enter Belagavi city to take part in the demonstration because of a district administration ban. A Lok Sabha member from the Hatkanangle district named Dhairyasheel Mane wrote to the district officials to make arrangements for his visit. Nitesh K Patil, the deputy commissioner for the Belagavi district, issued a prohibitory order barring Mane from entering.

Mane was been named as the chairperson of an expert committee established by the Maharashtra government in relation to the Supreme Court writ case over the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute.

On the opening day of the winter session, the opposition parties from Maharashtra—Congress, NCP, and Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena—held a protest rally close to Vidhan Bhavan earlier in the day.

Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, stated: "For the first time, Amit Shah, the union home minister, has mediated in the inter-state border conflict (between Maharashtra & Karnataka). Politics shouldn't be involved in this matter right now. Together, we should support the border residents.

Amit Shah intervened by convening a conference with the chief ministers of the two states, and he gave them the advise to hold off on making territorial demands until the Supreme Court has ruled on the issue.

Maharashtra government trying to pacify the issue

The opposition brought up the border issue in the assembly today and demanded that a resolution be passed to protect Marathi speakers, according to Shiv Sena MLA Sunil Prabhu TT (Uddhav Thackeray's group).

The Maharashtra-Karnataka boundary dispute has been brought up by the opposing party in the Maharashtra House today. There is a call for a resolution to be passed that will protect Marathi speakers.

"The collector of Belagavi is stopping people from Maharashtra from entering the region and this is totally wrong. No one can stop us from going anywhere in our country," he continued, saying that nothing had been accomplished despite CM Eknath Shinde addressing Amit Shah about the matter.

In the midst of the boundary dispute between the two states, the Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai's "fake" Twitter handle has come under fire from the Congress and the Maharashtra opposition.

Ashok Chavan, the head of the Congress, told PTI, "The state government was helping Karnataka to brush aside the controversy over the issue of the 'fake' Twitter account from which "provocative comments" were made."

Belagavi has been demanded to be merged with Maharashtra, according to the state, because of the district's sizable Marathi population. However, the Samiti has no representation in the current Karnataka Assembly.

Karnataka has consistently argued that the Mahajan Committee resolved the border dispute and that giving up any territory to another state was not an option.
According to officials in the governing BJP, the Maharashtra political parties have always helped the Samiti continue its work.
