Punjab News: Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Highlights Fourfold Increase in Canal Water for Agriculture

Punjab News– Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced on Monday that the availability of canal water for irrigation in the state's agricultural sector has increased by four times over the past two and a half years. Speaking at Chaoke village in Bathinda after inaugurating an Aam Aadmi Clinic, Mann emphasized that when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power on March 16, 2022, only 21% of canal water was available for irrigation. Today, that figure has risen to 84% through the installation of underground pipes and the reduction of water wastage.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Highlights Fourfold Increase in Canal Water for Agriculture

The CM expressed the government's goal to reach 100% canal water availability in the coming years, which would significantly reduce the reliance on groundwater extraction. Out of the state's 14 lakh tube wells, Mann projected that 5-6 lakh would cease groundwater extraction, leading to a rise in the water table.

Mann also highlighted the government's efforts to revive watercourses

Mann also highlighted the government's efforts to revive watercourses and drains that had disappeared, ensuring that canal water now reaches tail-end villages. He further announced the construction of a new canal to provide more water to farmers. Additionally, lift pumps and additional water outlets (mogha) would be allowed to further improve water access for irrigation.

In support of agriculture, the CM reassured farmers that they are being provided with uninterrupted power supply for their tube wells, ensuring consistent irrigation.
