 Punjab Launches Student Police Cadet Scheme to Foster Understanding

Punjab's Chief Minister, Bhagwant Singh Mann, has launched the Student Police Cadet (SPC) Scheme with the aim of providing students a comprehensive understanding of the police system and involving them as active contributors to governance and security. The scheme was inaugurated with the participation of more than 11,200 8th-grade students from 280 Government Schools through a video conference.

The SPC curriculum, designed by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), will span two years, covering class 8th in the current academic year 2023-24 and class 9th in the following academic year 2024-25. The state government has allotted Rs. 50,000 per year to each school for the implementation of the program, which will be carried out in 28 districts, including 23 Revenue Districts and Five Police Districts.

The scheme involves enrolling 40 students from 10 chosen schools in each district, totaling 11,200 students. The plan entails conducting one indoor class per month to accommodate the course, ensuring minimal disruption to the regular school curriculum. Additionally, there will be bi-monthly half-day outdoor activities, preferably after school hours or on weekends.

The primary goal of this initiative is to acquaint students with the functioning of the police force and encourage them to actively engage in governance and security matters. Students will have the opportunity to visit various police facilities, such as Police Offices, Police Stations, cyber cells, forensic science labs, and police training centers. The curriculum will also cover topics like traffic rules, participation in parades, self-defense training, legal rights and laws, internships with the police during law and order duties, and other activities focused on societal service and character development.

The curriculum encompasses a wide array of subjects, including an overview of the SPC, emerging crime trends, cybercrime, road safety, child safety, drug abuse awareness, corruption, gender-related issues, domestic violence, first aid, disaster response, and quiz contests. The coordination of the Student Police Cadet Scheme will be managed by the Community Affairs Division of the Police Department and the Department of Education.
