Militants and Volunteers Exchange Gunfire, Nine Injured

Nine people were hurt earlier on Monday in a shootout between militants and community volunteers in the Khamenlok area. They added that on Tuesday near Phougakchao Ikhai in the Bishnupur district, the security forces and Kuki terrorists engaged in a firefight. Security troops confronted the Kuki militants as they attempted to build bunkers near to Meitei communities, which led to a firefight. The curfew relaxation hours in Imphal East and Imphal West have been shortened by the district authorities from the customary 5 am to 6 pm to 5 am to 9 am. The ethnic violence that broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur a month ago resulted in at least 100 fatalities and 310 injuries. To bring calm back to the state, army and paramilitary men were sent there. After a "Tribal Solidarity March" was arranged in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, fighting first started on May 3. The majority of Meiteis, who make up around 53% of Manipur's population, reside in the Imphal Valley. Another 40% of the population is made up of the Naga and Kuki tribal groups, who live in the hill districts.
