Manipur Violence: Indian Army releases 12 militants after day long standoff with a mob of 1200

Manipur Violence: On Sunday, Indian army released 12 Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) militants following a day long standoff with a mob of 1200-1500 people, consisting primarily of women. The militants were arrested by the army during an operation in Manipur's Itham village. The mob encircled the Army unit and prevented forces to continue with the operation. The self-styled Lt Col Moirangthem Tamba aka Uttam, likely mastermind of Dogra ambush was also hiding in the village. The army stated that it did not want to risk the lives of civilians and thereby released the militants from captivity.

'Humane face of the Indian Army'.

The Army also praised the commanding officer of the operation for taking a 'mature decision' which exhibited "humane face of the Indian Army".

The Meitei militant group KYKL was involved in an ambush of a 6 Dogra unit in 2015. Releasing a statement on the decision to release militants, the Army said "Keeping in view the sensitivity of the use of kinetic force against a large irate mob led by women and likely casualties due to such action, a considered decision was taken to hand over all 12 cadres to the local leader."

Continuing peril in Manipur

The ethnic violence between Kuki and Meitei communities has so far claimed lives of more than 100 people.
