States Manipur Jiribam: Armed Militants Attack Farmers in Manipur’s Imphal East, Injuring Jawan Neha Kumari Nov 11, 2024 14:36 GMT Manipur Jiribam – In a violent escalation, suspected Kuki militants attacked farmers harvesting paddy in Sanasabi Loukol and nearby Thamnapokpi villages on Sunday morning. Around 10 a.m., militants allegedly launched the assault from Uyok Ching Maning hillock, prompting farmers to abandon their work and flee as bombs and heavy gunfire erupted in the fields. Security Forces Retaliate, Jawan Injured The Imphal East district police, along with the 4th Mahar Regiment and the 119th Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF), swiftly retaliated against the attackers, resulting in a gunfight that lasted approximately 40 minutes. During the exchange, a jawan from the 4th Mahar Regiment sustained a minor bullet injury to his left arm, which was treated with first aid at the scene, confirmed a senior police official. Repeated Attacks Raise Tensions in Manipur This incident follows a night of intense violence in the region. On Saturday night, suspected Kuki militants attacked Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi around 9:30 p.m., with gunfire continuing until early Sunday morning. Although no injuries were reported in that incident, the ongoing hostilities have heightened fears among local residents. Escalation in Violence Across Districts The violence has seen tragic casualties in recent days, as a 31-year-old woman was killed during an alleged militant attack in Jiribam district on Friday. Another woman, 34, succumbed to bullet injuries while working in Bishnupur’s paddy fields the following day. Further violence erupted on Saturday night, with militants attacking the Meitei village of Mongbung from three Kuki locations using sophisticated weapons, including bombs. Efforts to Restore Order Authorities are actively working to contain the violence and ensure the safety of civilians. Security forces remain on high alert as tensions persist across the region.
