MP Nursing Scam: High Court Grants Major Relief to Students of 65 Colleges

MP Nursing Scam: In a significant development in the ongoing nursing college scam in Madhya Pradesh, a division bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has granted substantial relief to students from 65 nursing colleges. These colleges were found unsuitable for conducting courses in a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. The court has directed that these students be allowed to sit for their exams and be transferred to government colleges.

The interim order was passed by the bench comprising Justice Sanjay Dwivedi and Justice A.K. Paliwal, following a petition filed by the students of these 65 colleges. Previously, during the hearing, petitioner Vishal Baghel from the Law Students Association had objected to the Madhya Pradesh Medical University declaring the academic year 2023-24 as a 'zero year' for nursing colleges. He argued that such a decision could only be taken by the state government.

State Government's Position

The court had also sought clarification from the state government regarding the declaration of 2023-24 as a 'zero year' for nursing colleges. The petitioner had raised concerns over the new rules for accrediting nursing colleges. The state government informed the court that no new rules for accrediting nursing colleges had been implemented and that the examinations for the academic year 2024-25 would be conducted in accordance with the standards of the Indian Nursing Council.

CBI Investigation and Findings

Earlier, the High Court had ordered a CBI investigation into the authenticity of all nursing colleges in the state. The CBI's investigation cleared 169 nursing colleges, identified 74 as needing improvements, and found 65 unsuitable. Subsequently, the court constituted a three-member committee led by retired High Court judge Justice Rajendra Kumar Srivastava to investigate two main issues: whether the 74 nursing colleges identified by the CBI could make the necessary changes within a stipulated time and how to accommodate the students of these unsuitable colleges in other institutions.

Arrest of CBI Officers

The investigation also took a dramatic turn when CBI officers involved in the probe were arrested by the CBI's Delhi team for allegedly accepting bribes from nursing college owners in exchange for fitness certificates. Following this, the court ordered a fresh investigation into the 169 colleges initially given a clean chit by the CBI.

Court's Decision

The court's decision to allow students from the 65 unsuitable colleges to sit for their exams and transfer them to government colleges brings significant relief to the affected students. This order ensures that their academic futures are safeguarded despite the irregularities found in their institutions. The ongoing investigations and court proceedings continue to shed light on the extent of the nursing college scam and underscore the importance of stringent oversight and accountability in educational institutions.
