States 'It was never Love Jihad': New details unfurl in Uttarkashi's alleged Abduction case Shivani Negi Jun 18, 2023 11:39 GMT After being closed for more than two weeks, some shops belonging to Muslim traders in Purola town of Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district reopened, bringing back hopes of normalcy amid heavy police deployment. For the unversed, Muslim traders in Purola shut their business establishments on May 28 after protests by some Hindu right-wing organisations. After constant threats and protests, some Muslim residents also fled the town as they were also demanded verification of all ‘outsiders’ by locals. This all began on May 27 when an alleged abduction of a minor girl started communal tensions in town, with a few Hindu organisations terming it a case of ‘Love Jihad’ as one of the accused was Muslim. 'It was never a Love Jihad case' Now, in a shocking turn of events, the uncle of the girl, a school teacher, has opened up about the case, revealing it was never a case of Love Jihad. “There were attempts from the first hour to make this a communal issue. Right-wing activists even prepared a police complaint for us on their own, but the police didn’t accept it. It was never a love jihad case, but a regular crime. Those that committed it, are behind bars. The judiciary will now decide,” he told HT.
