States Delhi News: 15 houses collapsed, one dead after heavy rains in the capital, IMD issues orange alert for Punjab and Haryana Ambuj Sharma Jul 08, 2023 18:31 GMT Delhi News: On Saturday, approximately 15 houses and other residences collapsed and one person died after heavy downpour in Delhi. The day marks heaviest amount of rainfall in a single day for the past 20 years in National Capital. The Delhi Fire services department shared the news of house collapse and death of 58-year-old Ranjeet Kaur in Karol Bagh area. The heavy rains have caused waterlogging, uprooting of tress which led to halt in vehicular movement in many parts of the city. Monsoon trouble During the long traffic jams amidst heavy water logging, many people were forced to abandon their two-wheelers and walk their way through rainwater. Many shopkeepers at Connaught Place faced troubles due to waterlogging and commuters also struggled because of waterlogged roads. The PWD was handed 15 complaints of waterlogging throughout the day. One PWD official told ANI “Apart from these, we also received complaints about waterlogging on other stretches that are under the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) or other agencies. We forwarded those complaints. The situation is under control so far. The road around Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College in Delhi University’s north campus witnessed waterlogging, causing inconvenience to commuters.” Orange alert issued for Punjab and Haryana After the historic rain day in Delhi, a yellow alert has been issued. According to IMD , the sitation for Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh is more grim as 'orange alert' has been issued for these regions. This region usually receives monsoon by Ju 5 and this year the annual trend of monsoon arrival has continued in the farm rich regions. The monsoon winds coupled with a Western Disturbance coming from the Mediterranean Sea will make matters difficult for coming days.
