CM Ashok Gehlot gifts 100 units of free electricity for all in Rajasthan from June 1

Free electricity: With Assembly elections approaching, it’s raining freebies in Rajasthan. The Ashok Gehlot government will provide 100 units of electricity free every month to every household from June 1.

The decision is keeping in line with the Congress government's budget declaration. It aims to give relief to more than 1 crore domestic consumers connected to the grid in the state.

To cost state exchequer Rs 5,200 crore annually

The new scheme is expected to cost the state exchequer Rs 5,200 crore annually. Along with the existing subsidy - ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 750 - that remains open for anyone unwilling to opt for free power, the combined financial load is expected to be Rs 7,000 crore.

"The total number of domestic electricity consumers in the state is 1.24 crore. Among them, there are 1.04 crore consumers who use less than 100 units a month," a senior official said.

Reports said only those consumers will be included in this, who have registered in the relief camps. There are 1.24 crore total domestic consumers in the state, but only 76 lakh have registered in the relief camps.

Consumers who consume is more than 100 units will continue to get the prescribed subsidy. There is no compulsion to register them. The Finance Department will also issue SOP in this regard. If a consumer registers now, he will get the benefit of free electricity from the next bill. However, this discount will be added only on the basis of consumption in the month of May.

Close watch on those consuming 90 to 100 units

Instructions have been given to the officers to stop the misuse of free electricity. Sample readings of consumers whose power consumption is coming up to 90 to 100 units will be checked. This will ensure that the benefit of free electricity is not being given by showing low readings.

The benefit of free electricity will start from the June 1. Exemption will be given on the basis of the amount of electricity consumed in May. Those who have not registered in the dearness relief camp will not get this exemption at present. – Bhaskar A. Sawant, Principal Secretary, Energy Department.
