Karim Benzema Retirement: A day after Farnce lost to Argentina in the FIFA World Cuo final in Doha's, French striker Karim Benzema has announced his retirement from international football. Benzema made the announcement on his 35th birthday on Monday.

Real Madrid star player is the current Ballon d'Or holder and played as many as 97 matches for France in international football. Benzema scored 37 times in his international career.

Benzema missed FIFA World Cup

Benzema missed FIFA World Cup after suffering a thigh injury during training a day before the start of the tournament.

"I made the effort and the mistakes it took to be where I am today and I'm proud of it! I have written my story and ours is ending," Benzema wrote in a tweet on Monday, signalling the end of his international career.

Benzema is already 35 and many knew that he is unlikely for the 2026 World Cup in North America in four years from now.

Benzema has always been in controversy

The star player had suffered a lot in his career and he only got relief in recent years. Benzema has not been considered for national duty for many years because of his alleged involvement in a case to blackmail a former teammate through incriminating videos taken from his cell phone.

Benzema made his international debut in 2007 and has played at the European Championship in 2008 and 2012 as well as the 2014 World Cup. He was not been considered for the 2018 tournament in Russia where France scripted a winning triumph over the blackmail scandal.
