In the extra period, no team managed to score. The 2018 champions struggled early on, and Celtic attacker Daizen Maeda rightfully gave Japan the lead just before halftime. Both teams failed to score in extra time, and Croatia prevailed in the penalty shootout thanks to Dominik Livakovic's three saves of Japan's attempts and Mario Pasalic's successful conversion of the game-winning penalty. Heartbreakingly, Japan lost the game on penalties despite dominating Croatia for a large portion of regulation time, which finished in a 1-1 draw.
