FIFA World Cup 2022 Awards: The mega sporting event has finally concluded and it has been the one to remember for ages. The world cup finally fulfilled the life-long dream of Messi as his team could take home the trophy after winning 4-2 in the penalties. Earlier, the teams were on 3-3 tie after the extra time. However, there is one similarity between this year and the time Argentina last won the world cup.

What similarity does the duo have?

For the unaware, Argentina last won the world cup in 1986 under Diego Maradona. This year, Messi scored 7 goals and won the golden ball award. He also became the only player to win the award twice (last won in 2014). However, the stark similarity is that Diego Maradona too won this award in the year 1986 for his blistering performance that gave the country their second title after winning it for the first time in 1978.

Maradona is considered to be one of the best player to have ever graced the game. He is considered as the icon and legend by many fans across the globe. His accolades and records as a player are hard to break. Messi, too, have revealed his respect and affection for one of the greatest the country has every produced.

Who won the iconic awards at FIFA World Cup 2022

In this year’s FIFA World Cup, Messi won the golden ball award while Mbappe took home the golden boot award after scoring 8 goals, three of which came in the finals. Messi scored 7 goals in the tournament, just one behind the latter. Argentina’s goalie Martinez won the golden globe award for saves.
