FIFA World Cup 2022: A TV reporter from Argentina who travelled to Qatar to cover the FIFA World Cup had a terrible experience when she was robbed on the opening day of the competition itself. Although the experience was undoubtedly terrifying, the woman was taken aback when she called the police to report the crime.

Though the police gave her their entire support and assured her that the robber would be found quickly thanks to the nation's high-security cameras, it was their request for her sentencing recommendation that left her speechless.

Police's response takes her by surprise

Dominique Metzger, the victim, was performing live reporting at the time of the incident. According to the allegations, a number of things were taken from her handbag. Additionally, video of the live coverage gained popularity on social media.

Metzger said, “I went to the station and that is when the cultural differences began. The policewoman said to me: 'We have high-tech cameras everywhere and we are going to locate him [the thief] with face detection. What do you want the justice system to do when we find him?”

Continuing further, she said “What justice do you want? What sentence do you want us to give him? Do you want him to be sentenced to five years in prison? Do you want him to be deported?” This kind of response was surely unexpected for her and she was left dumbstruck for a moment.

Journalists facing problems in Qatar

Reporting from FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar has proven challenging for a number of journalists. An earlier request to stop filming while creating a segment for his channel was made to a Danish journalist. The reporter was unintentionally interrupted, and the tournament organisers later apologised to her.

Responding to the incident, authorities said “Tournament organisers are aware of an incident where a Danish broadcast crew was mistakenly interrupted during a live broadcast in one of Qatar's tourist destinations.”

“Tournament organisers have since spoken to the journalist and issued an advisory to all entities to respect the filming permits in place for the tournament." Sunday marked the start of the FIFA World Cup, with Ecuador defeating the hosts Qatar 2-0.
