SPORTS Shashi Tharoor wants Rishabh Pant to take break from white-ball cricket Harshit Jan 01, 2023 16:48 GMT Wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant has once again become trolls' target after failing to perform in the third and final ODI vs New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Pant was chosen over Sanju Samson again but he managed to score just 10 runs. Pant has been in the center of all criticism since the T20 World Cup when he was given a chance over Dinesh Karthik in the semifinal vs England. Senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also jumped into the row and criticised Indian team management for chosing Pant again and again. "Pant has done well at No. 4, so it is important to back him," says VVS Laxamn . He's a good player out of form who's failed in ten of his last 11 innings; Samson averages 66 in ODIs, has made runs in all his last five matches & is on the bench. Go figure.Sanju Samson," wrote Tharoor on Twitter. "One more failure for Pant, who clearly needs a break from white-ball cricket. One more opportunity denied to Sanju Samson who now has to wait for theIPL to show that he’s one of the best too-order bats in India. #IndvsNZ," he added. But the wicketkeeper batter is getting chances regularly over the players who are constantly performing in the domestic circuit. Sanju Samson is one of the examples, the Kerala blistering wicketkeeper-batsman has been on the sidelines of Indian cricket for the last six to seven years. During his initial days, there was no place for him as a wicketkeeper in the team because of the MS Dhoni factor. Later after Dhoni's retirement, Samson was ignored yet again as Pant rode on Test cricket achievement to seal a spot in the team. Pant has played 30 ODIs so far with an average of 34.60 while he represented India in 66 T20Is where he has the poorest average (22.43). No player in the Indian team has even played more than 30 matches in any format with such a low average in the last 7 years.
