BCCI: There were several rumours regarding the International Cricket Council (ICC) chairperson and whether India will send a candidate for the position before to the BCCI's 91st Annual General Meeting (AGM), which was held on Tuesday in Mumbai. More so now that Sourav Ganguly's resignation as BCCI president has been official, initial reports suggested that the BCCI would field the former India captain.
On the other hand, sources have verified that there was no discussion about putting out a candidate for ICC chairman during the AGM. The nomination period for the ICC's top position closes on October 20.
This comes a day after Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, pushed for Ganguly by pleading with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to nominate the former BCCI President to the top cricket organisation. In a statement made on Monday, Mamata Banerjee said that Sourav Ganguly had been "deprived" of his position as the head of the Indian Cricket Board and urged Prime Minister Modi to "compensate him" by appointing him to the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Currently, it has been learned through sources that the BCCI AGM gave office-holders permission to choose India's representative to the ICC and to reassemble the Cricket Advisory Committee.
Sourav Ganguly had been "unfairly left out," according to the chief minister of Bengal, who described the situation as "bad and sad." According to insiders, the former India captain was eager to serve a second term as BCCI President but was informed that there was no precedent for doing so. Ganguly was also given the chance to head the IPL, but he rejected.
"There are only one or two people who are entitled to go to the ICC. I will request the PM, my humble regards to the PM. Please take care that Sourav Ganguly is must be allowed to contest the ICC election." Mamata Banerjee said.
