Australian Open: Sebastian Korda shocks Daniil Medvedev with a stunning victory, Russian eliminated

Australian Open: Former World Number 1 Daniil Medvedev has been knocked out of the Australian Open after suffering a defeat against Sebastian Korda. Korda blasted Medvedev 7-6 (9/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) on Rod Laver Arena to race into the last 16.

Sensational Korda

"An unbelievable match, I sort of knew what I had to do and I stuck with it even when I was going up and down with the emotions," said the 22-year-old Korda, adding that his game plan was "just go for it".

"I'm thrilled right now, I played amazing."

The 22-year old Korda came out firing early on Rod Laver Arena, where he charged to a 4-1 lead with a double-break through a combination of impenetrable defence and powerful baseline ball striking. However, Medvedev showed the resilience that took him to the Melbourne final in each of the past two years. He hauled himself back to 5-5 as he threatened to steal the opening set despite largely struggling to dictate play.

Medvedev knocked out

Medvedev is the runner's up in the last two Australian Open, to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and Rafael Nadal in 2022.

He is only the fourth man in the Open era to reach three consecutive Melbourne Park finals after Djokovic, Mats Wilander and Ivan Lendl.
