Asian Games 2023: India's squad at the Hangzhou Asian Games secured another gold medal by defeating Pakistan in the men's squash team event on September 30th. Despite trailing 0-1 after losing the first match, Saurav Ghoshal made a brilliant comeback. Subsequently, Abhay Singh clinched a thrilling victory in his best-of-five match with a 3-2 scoreline. This remarkable win propelled India to secure the Gold medal in the best-of-three match, with a final score of 2-1.
India scripts historic victory
After Singh's Game 4 victory at 11-9, the match was tied 2-2. In Game 5, he faced the risk of losing the gold medal at 8-10 but mounted an incredible comeback, securing four consecutive points. This performance led to India clinching their 11th gold medal in the current Games, marking their second of the day. In the final round, Singh emerged victorious with a score of 3 points, while Noor secured 2 points. The final round's overall score was as follows: 11-7, 9-11, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10.
The victory enabled India to improve upon their bronze medal performance from the 2018 Jakarta Games. It also served as redemption for India, avenging their earlier group stage defeat to the same opponent. This gold medal marked India's 10th at the Hangzhou Games and brought their overall medal count to 36. Previously, the women's team had secured a bronze medal in the competition.
