Shradh 2023: Essential Dos and Don'ts you need to follow during the 15-Days, Must Check!

Shradh 2023: During Pitru Paksha, it's believed that three generations of deceased ancestors temporarily reside in Pitrilok, an intermediary realm. The god of death, Yamaraj or Yama, releases them to visit their living relatives. Families offer gifts, food, and water to their ancestors along the Ganges or other riverbanks, usually through priests and Brahmins. This period, spanning fifteen days, holds immense significance, marked by rituals like Shradh, Pind Daan, and Tarpan.

Drik Panchang notes that this year, Pitru Paksha will be observed from September 29 to October 14. As we approach the commencement of Pitru Paksha, it's essential to be mindful of certain dos and don'ts.

Dos during Shradh 2023

The eldest son of the deceased person is traditionally responsible for performing Tarpan during Pitru Paksha. It's believed that during this period, the deceased souls visit Earth to receive offerings of gifts, food, and water from their family. Crows are considered the messengers of Yamaraj or the souls of departed family members, so Pind Daan, typically consisting of rice and sesame seeds, is offered to them. Additionally, people engage in acts of charity by feeding the poor and animals. It's recommended to have just one meal a day and practice celibacy during these auspicious fifteen days.
