NATION See BJP's First List For Karnataka assembly elections Jyoti B Apr 12, 2023 14:11 GMT The first list of 189 candidates for the May 10 assembly elections in Karnataka was released by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday. Arun Singh, the BJP's general secretary in charge of Karnataka, and union minister Dharmendra Pradhan made the announcement that the party would be fielding eight women and 52 new faces in its initial list of candidates. While former chief minister B S Yediyurappa's son B Y Vijayendra will be running from his father's Shikaripura constituency, the BJP has selected Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai from his customary Shiggaon seat. C T Ravi, the national general secretary of the BJP, will run for office in Chikkmagaluru, while state minister R Ashoka will face off against D K Shivakumar, the state congress, in Kanakapura. In the Varuna constituency, former CM Siddaramaiah will face off against Karnataka Housing Minister V Somanna. The BJP expects a challenging election campaign. In the past 40 years, Karnataka, the only state in south India where the BJP is in power, has never returned an incumbent to office. A party must gain more than 113 of the 224 assembly seats in Karnataka in order to establish the government.
