Rahul Gandhi's remarks during a conversation with journalists at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, provided the turning point. Rahul Gandhi was asked about the Congress' collaboration with the Muslim League in Kerala by a journalist in the context of the party's support for secularism and opposition to the BJP's Hindutva agenda. Rahul Gandhi replied, "There is nothing non-secular about the Muslim League; they are a perfectly secular party. The reporter, in my opinion, hasn't thoroughly researched the Muslim League.

BJP and Congress Engage in War of Words over Rahul Gandhi's Muslim League Statement

Reacting to Gandhi’s remarks, BJP I-T Cell Chief Amit Malviya tweeted: “Jinnah’s Muslim League, the party responsible for India’s partition, on religious lines, according to Rahul Gandhi is a ‘secular’ party. Rahul Gandhi, though poorly read, is simply being disingenuous and sinister here. It is also his compulsion to remain acceptable in Wayanad." It should be mentioned that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), founded in Kerala, and the Muslim League, led by Mohammad Ali Jinnah, are wholly independent and have no link to one another. In the state of Kerala, the UDF, which is led by the Congress party, has long benefited from the backing of the IUML. Congressman Pawan Khera vigorously refuted the claims made by the BJP while maintaining the same difference. "Do you lack literacy? Don't know the distinction between the Muslim League of Kerala and the Muslim League of Jinnah? It was Jinnah's Muslim League that your ancestors sided with. The BJP has a partnership with the second Muslim League, Khera tweeted.

Rahul Gandhi and BJP Clash over Understanding of Indian Politics and Muslim League Allegiances

"I believe that the BJP of today, led by Modi and Amit Shah, lacks understanding of Indian politics. They may be familiar with Pakistani politics, but not with Indian politics…Syama Prasad Mookerjee had joined forces with the Muslim League of Jinnah. This Muslim League is not that one. According to ANI, the Congress leader stated, "This is that Muslim League with which BJP established an alliance in Nagpur municipal. BJP Leader Nalin Kohli highlighted the difficulty the Congress was facing as a result of Rahul Gandhi's remark by saying, "The Congress is stuck in an intriguing predicament as he (Rahul Gandhi) is their supreme leader and they have to appreciate anything he says.
