Punjab: Heatwave reduces national wheat production by 2.75 million tonnes in Haryana, Punjab claims Agriculture Minister Tomar

Punjab: The country's production of wheat harvests has decreased by 2.75 million tonnes this year as a result of extreme weather conditions, particularly in the areas that cultivate wheat: Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

According to the fourth estimate for the agricultural year 2021–2022, wheat production would amount to 106.84 million tonnes, a decrease of 2.75 million tonnes (2.5%) from the 109.59 million tonnes predicted for the previous year.
The early March heatwave in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh is blamed by experts for this year's decline.

Narendra Tomar, the Union Agriculture Minister, made this announcement in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. In answer to a query from a Punjab Congress MP  Ravneet Singh Bittu, he made a written statement.

The damage to crops brought on by the searing weather in March and April 2022 was previously described in the most recent report from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
“Increase in extreme weathers — that of minimum and maximum temperatures — has been the likely reason. The extreme heat in March and April this year had resulted in dry winds, high evapotranspiration and moisture stress. Several districts of Punjab were affected with that event which resulted in yellowing and shriveling of wheat grain and forced maturity, thereby impacting the yields up to 25 per cent reduction,” according to the research.

Agriculture specialist Devinder Sharma said, “We are in the middle of a climate emergency. It should be addressed at the earliest. There should be more discussion on global climate change, and not only when it impacts wheat production."

The government made every effort.

The agricultural minister also stated that ICAR was keeping a close eye on the disease condition in the nation while also developing a variety of seeds for different crops, including wheat, that were resistant to climate stress.
