Medicine books being translated, says TN minister after Amit Shah bats for Tamil language

Tamil language: A day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged the Tamil Nadu government to teach medicine in mother tongue Tamil, State Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi said the work of translating medical education books in Tamil Nadu had already been initiated. He said that the state had introduced Tamil medium in technical education 12 years ago when Karunanidhi was the chief minister.

Ponmudi also said work was in progress to translate medical education text books in Tamil language to initiate Tamil medium of technical education in the medical field.

Ponmudi said he wanted to thank Union Home minister Amit Shah for taking interest in Tamil language and that he was happy to know that the home minister understood the importance of Tamil language.

The minister asked the home minister to allocate funds for the state for development of Tamil language at par with the funds that the Centre allocated for Sanskrit.

Mother tongue

On Saturday Home Minister Amit Shah had appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to introduce Tamil as a medium of instruction for medical and technical education courses. Several states were already offering medical and technical education in their native languages, he said and added that Tamil Nadu too should follow the trend.

National Education Policy, 2020 is aiming to make new improve the education system. One of the significant moves in this direction is introducing the mother tongue as the medium of instruction in schools until Class 5 or above. States like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have already made it mandatory to introduce teaching in mother tongue in schools.

Shah who was speaking at an event yesterday, said, "Tamil is one of the oldest languages in the world. Today, I suggested to the Tamil Nadu govt the necessity of teaching engineering & medical courses in the Tamil language."
