The Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi is to visit India this week. Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi’s visit to India is part of the six nation tour around Asia and Africa. Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi itinerary aims to focus on the cooperation between Japan and the Global South and into Indo-Pacific Policy.

Bilateral Talks

At a press conference in Tokyo, the Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi stated that the focus during his visit to India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, South Africa, Uganda, and Ethiopia is on enhancing bilateral ties and strengthening relationships with Japan’s international partners, including those in Global South and Indo Pacific region. The notion of cooperation is something that Japan attaches great importance to its G-7 presidency. Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi visit to India is an extended push into the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” policy which is spearheaded by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in March 2023.

Foreign Minister Hayashi plans to meet with his counterparts from the region for high level discussion into topics of bilateral cooperation and engagement for development, technology, and healthcare and efforts to synchronize Japan’s development initiative in India, Maldives and Sri-Lanka.

Synchronized Cooperation

India and Japan both are looking to coordinate their key focus areas, amid the G-20 presidency of India and G-7 presidency of Japan for year 2023. Both countries are looking to explore different initiatives with the cooperation of each other. India will aim for Japan’s collaboration in its “Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue” (IPRD) strategy to establish and consolidate principles of open and free trade, open navigation of international water and security of the region. Furthermore Japan will focus for collaboration into Japanese Prime Minister’s crowned policy of “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” (FOIP) for prosperity and development by combining corporation between the two continents (Africa and Asia) and two oceans (Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean).
