 Government accepts collegiums recommendation; 3 High Court Chief Justices and 2 judges elevated to Supreme Court

Three high court chief justices and two judges who have been recommended for promotion to the Supreme Court will shortly have their names cleared by the Government. The Supreme Court will have 32 judges on the bench once the five are sworn in as judges.

Government clears names of 5 Judges to Supreme Court

The Chief Justice of India is one of the Supreme court's 34 authorized judges. It currently has 27 working members.

The petition regarding the delay in judge appointments was being heard by the court. The government announced that it would soon approve the collegium's recommendation to elevate five judges.

Names of Judges slated for Supreme Court promotion

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended five names to the government on December 13:

  • Justice Pankaj Mithal - Chief Justice, Rajasthan High Court;
  • Justice Sanjay Karol - Chief Justice, Patna High Court
  • Justice P V Sanjay Kumar - Chief Justice, Manipur High Court;
  • Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah of Patna High Court;
  • Justice Manoj Misra of Allahabad High Court
