NATION Ex-CM Jagadish Shettar resigns from BJP Jyoti B Apr 16, 2023 13:50 GMT Before the May 10 Assembly elections, former chief minister Jagadish Shettar, who was not given a ticket to run for office, submitted his resignation as an MLA. He received an invitation to join the party from the opposition Congress without delay. After the BJP's central leadership made it obvious that he would not be accommodated this time, Shettar made his decision. At Sirsi in the Uttara Kannada district, he presented his resignation to Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri. The Hubli-Dharwad Central MLA resigned as a legislator today despite the last-ditch efforts of senior party figures, including Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, and the BJP's election in-charge for Karnataka, Dharmendra Pradhan, to convince him to change his mind. Shettar, a six-time MLA and former State BJP President, said on Saturday that he would leave the saffron party after three decades of participation. The 67-year-old reaffirmed his commitment to running in the elections.Senior Congress leader B K Hariprasad added that Shettar is welcome to join the party if he so chooses. Hariprasad called Shettar a "honest CM" and claimed there had never been a complaint made against him while he was in charge. Nalin Kumar Kateel, the president of the BJP's state unit, claimed that senior BJP figures had made an attempt to "keep him in the party." In answer to a query from a reporter, Kateel stated that there was no "conspiracy" behind the party's choice to not field him this time.
