 Know what is Modified Atkins Diet (MAD); Pros and cons

Modified Atkins Diet: The new or Modified Atkins Diet (MAD) is a mix between the classic Ketogenic Diet and the Atkins diet.  As in ketogenic, MAD is a weight loss eating plan and has a very low carbohydrate content. Original Atkins limits carbohydrates and allows as much protein as one desires. The MAD, on the other hand, discourages too much protein and encourages 

The MAD is among the three alternative diets used to treat seizures in people with epilepsy. The other two are the MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) diet and LGIT (low glycemic index treatment). MAD is primarily used when patients with daily seizures do not fully respond to medication.

Carbohydrates and protein ratio 1:1

Carbohydrates and protein ratio is 1:1 in this diet. It includes high-fat foods such as butter, dense cream and vegetables along with protein-rich foods such as fish, chicken and red meat. Sweet foods such as biscuits and cakes are completely eliminated. So is food rich in carbohydrates such as pasta, potatoes, bread and cereals. But you can gradually introduced them after the first month. According to various studies, the diet is as effective as the original Atkins diet.

Here are some advantages and disadvantages of the diet:

Advantages of MAD

You need not restrict fluid or calorie intake

Fats are encouraged but you need not weigh them

Proteins are not restricted; usually, around 35% of the calories come from protein

You can start the diet at home too

There is no need to fast before starting the diet

The diet can lead to weight loss

Unlike the ketogenic classic Atkins diet, it is unusual to develop kidney stones

MAD is easier and less time consuming to adhere to than classic Atkins

Disadvantages of MAD

Cholesterol level may increase in some patients

Ketosis (increased ketone level in bodily tissues) can make people feel ill and deter them from eating or drinking

The diet does not contain sufficient minerals and vitamins, so need to take lots of supplements

Constipation is a major side effect. High-fiber vegetables are recommended. Also, drink plenty of water

Once seizures stop, patients may stop the diet if they so desire. Stop the diet if no improvements are visible.
