Delhi government makes face masks, covers mandatory

With COVID-19 cases and the positivity rate rising in Delhi, the district officials have started forming teams to strictly enforce the mask mandate and issue a fine of Rs 500 to violators, officials said.

The district magistrates have been instructed to ensure that the laxity that had set in due to reduction in cases is corrected and wearing masks in public places is strictly enforced, a senior Revenue department officer said.

On Wednesday, Delhi reported 2,146 fresh Covid cases and the positivity rate rose to 17.83 per cent. The national capital registered eight Covid deaths, the highest in nearly 180 days.

"Although the majority of the recent cases have been mild, we need to be cautious in the coming days and follow Covid-appropriate behaviour to prevent an exponential rise in Covid cases. The elderly and those with comorbidities should take more precautions as the disease tends to be more severe in them, leading to hospitalisation, ICU admissions and sometimes death," Richa Sareen, senior consultant, Pulmonology, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, told news agency PTI.
