Truly Empowered! Jaya Bachchan Annoyed as Rajya Sabha Dy Chairman Refers Her by Amitabh's Name

Jaya Bachchan: Veteran actress and politician Jaya Bachchan took a strong stance yesterday when Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh addressed her using her husband Amitabh Bachchan's name.

Unexpected Address Sparks Reaction

When Harivansh Narayan Singh called upon Jaya Bachchan to speak in the House, he said, "Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan ji, please." This address didn't sit well with Jaya Bachchan, who promptly responded, "Sir, sirf Jaya Bachchan bolte to kaafi hojata (It would've been enough to call me Jaya Bachchan)."

Clarification and Critique

Singh explained that her name is officially recorded as Jaya Amitabh Bachchan in Parliament's records. He said, "Your full name was written here, I just repeated the same." Jaya Bachchan was quick to point out a broader issue, stating, "This is something new, that women will be recognised by the name of their husbands. They (women) have no existence or achievements of their own."

Addressing a Tragic Incident

Later, Jaya Bachchan shifted focus to a tragic incident involving three UPSC aspirants in Delhi. "It's a very painful incident and we should not bring politics into the matter," she said. The students drowned in the flooded basement of a coaching centre in East Delhi last week. This tragedy has led to student protests, with many blaming civic negligence. The incident has also sparked a political blame game, with the BJP targeting the Aam Aadmi Party.
