 Olivia Newton-John: Grammy singer-actor dies at 73

Olivia Newton-John: Singer who soared to the top of the world's pop music charts in the 1970s and 1980s, Olivia Newton-John, died on Monday at age 73 at her home in southern California.

Newton-John's death was announced on her Instagram account, saying she "passed away peacefully" at her ranch home "surrounded by family and friends."

The four-time Grammy winner, Newton-John revealed several years ago that her breast cancer had metastasised and spread to her back which forced her to cancel performances. Twenty-five years earlier, Newton-John had undergone a partial mastectomy and later established a cancer treatment-research facility in Australia.

Olivia started performing as a child and became a global superstar after moving to the US. When she had her first hit in 1971 with "If Not for You" — a Bob Dylan song had been recorded by George Harrison, She was blond, blue-eyed and brimming with wholesomeness.

Followed in her next few years, she won a Grammy for best female country vocal voice. The latter song won Grammys for best female pop performance and record of the year.

Olivia also won the Country Music Association's female singer of the year award in 1974 after beating out country stars Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton. The New York Times once described her voice as "nearly colorless."

She co-starred with John Travolta in "Grease," the 1978 film that would become one of the most popular musicals in Hollywood history.

Olivia, whose sister died of brain cancer, became an advocate after her first bout with breast cancer and established the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in her hometown. She also promoted the Olivia Breast Self-Exam Kit.

She first married to Xanadu actor Matt Lattanzi and divorced in 1995. Then she married a businessman John Easterling in 2008.
